The CrankyVC: Avoiding Yes-Man Feedback Loops
“Bobby” was born out of a critical observation in entrepreneurship: founders are routinely surrounded by polite encouragement. Friendly peers, accommodating incubators, and tentative investors frequently avoid delivering direct, unfiltered, and devastating critiques. This “yes-man” echo chamber shields early-stage startups from market realities until they burn through their life savings and get crushed.
A little tough love can nudge an idea in the right direction, improve the initial research, and give it a better shot at not ending up in the startup graveyard.
To break this loop, I spun up The CrankyVC: a simulated venture advisory panel representing different personalities, backgrounds, and evaluation styles. The goal is to simulate the high-pressure, cynical, or dismissive reception that pitch decks encounter in the real world. Rather than giving a dry score, CrankyVC delivers critiques that expose the gaps, structural risks, and unexamined market assumptions of a pitch. Over time, the feature set will evolve to help you build a prototype, map out starting financials, prepare a pitch deck, draft a business plan, and construct all the other assets a so-called “real” business needs. All of this is designed with one goal: giving you the tools to help you succeed.
The other feature is the ability to get fast, quick, honest, and off-the-cuff reactions from different personalities. You can get anything from some lovely “Awww, that's cute, have a muffin” feedback all the way to a very, well, very cranky VC. And for bonus points, I tried to capture the Silicon Valley hype and nonsense, but in a fun way. And, of course, nothing would be complete without a Quant that crunches numbers without emotion.
Every lawyer in Canada is screaming: “For entertainment purposes!” as the disclaimer. I'm not a Venture Capitalist, although I used to play one in Toronto. I wasn't very good so, what was that? Right: “For entertainment purposes only”—you know, like every AI bot on the planet. I wish you much success and love.
